The Island - Questions

  1. The main theme of the movie according to me is both about how we underestimate the sheer power of human curiosity and the fact that scientific wonders usually are miraculous but can also result in devastating outcomes, and that we shouldn’t always promote new ideas. In the movie we see how the main character (Lincoln Six Echo) starts questioning his own existence/meaning and other life matters, for example where those fishy ”food-tubes” lead to and the concept of The Island. After a while his friends also start to frown upon these enigmas, which finally leads to catastrophical and fatal consequences for the staff, especially doctor Merrick, and the ”insurance” (huge quotation marks) company finally falls apart. This also shows how one meagre person could infuse a huge event of consecutive problems.

  1. 2. Doctor Merrick’s idea of making an insurance company with the basis of cloning technology is not that preposterously bad as it sounds (it’s also really innovative), albeit you don’t abuse it. This is of course not a cheap method of insuring body parts but provides a high success rate of curing and surviving almost lethal damage dealt to the body. His top priority was most presumably money when it came to deciding wether or not to utilise this dangerous type of technology (that’s mostly how all mad investors think). The movie allegedly does not promote cloning if you keep in mind how violent and negative it presented the corporation. This is not surprising or new at all in this genre of movies (dystopias).
