Bohemian Rhapsody (My Kind of Music)

”Bohemian Rhapsody” is a song written by Freddie Mercury, one of the most flamboyant and awe-inspiring lead singers of all time, in the year 1975 for Queen’s album ”A Night at the Opera”. Upon release of the song it instantly hit the top charts all over the world, deeming it to be a commercial success (a bit of an understatement in my opinion) and one of the best selling singles in the world after selling more than a million copies by the end of 1976. It has also been hailed as one of the most complex songs in the history of music with it consisting of an intro, ballad, guitar solo, opera, hard rock and an outro witch a length of six minutes (which was initially frowned upon, but I digress).

The lyrics of the song may be a bit unique but it’s not meant to be eloquent or describe a specific story, Freddie Mercury even stated himself in different occasions that’s either just a rhyming nonsense or that it’s something people shouldn’t think about, just listen. It’s a versatile song that may be interpreted in many ways. You can presumably trace some arabic words in the song back to Freddie Mercury’s childhood in Zanzibar, but that’s more of an easter egg than buzz words with a substantial meaning.

So in general the lyrics are a bit of an enigma, but it’s really the sheer complexity and tunes that make it special. I personally love the song, and when it’s stuck in my head I can’t help myself from not singing the whole entirety of the song out loud no matter of the circumstances. It has a soul, a mysterious meaning that nobody will know, but that’s what makes it beautiful, amongst other things like the opera part where you can really hear the quintessence of Freddie Mercury (opera was his second career after he left the band, he pretty much nailed that one too).
